One Hundred Eighty Two

Today is Lulu, Momo, and B’s mom’s last day in Europe. For the past year I’ve been so excited about B’s mom taking the girls home for us so B and me can spend a few more weeks here on our own. But now that the day has come, I’m freaking out a little bit. We mostly spent the day organizing and packing and then headed out to dinner at a place several people recommended called Le Refuge de Fondues. On our way we walked through the garden at the Louvre and snapped this photo. The restaurant is supposedly a riot where they serve wine in baby bottles, are over the top rude (to be funny), and you have to sit with strangers. We were so disappointed not to find it. We had an address and our map app, but it was nowhere to be seen. We even asked several locals and they all looked at us like we were crazy. If anyone knows whether this place is still around, let me know! I’d love to try again some day. We ended up settling for some other place and talked about all our adventures with the girls. The girls talked about what they were both looking forward to upon arriving back in California. Del Taco was at the top of their list. We put them in a cab tonight with B’s mom, their passports, and most of our luggage. Me and Momo cried and hugged each other. I’m kind of tearing up right now remembering it. Ugh. Hard stuff to let your babies go knowing they have a long trip ahead of them and it will be weeks before you see them again.

Today we slept in which was much needed. C said goodbye. We won’t see her again until she returns to California in October. We had flower shaped gelato cones. We watched the first half of the France vs. Germany World Cup match with the locals. The pub was packed from the television to the street. Finally we enjoyed a lovely dinner cruise and amazing views of Paris from the river. That’s how we celebrated America’s birthday : )

Today we all took the train out to Versailles. This was one of Lulu’s “must sees”. It was quite crowded and we had to wait in a long hot line to get into the main palace. C took off to check out Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet while the rest of us were herded through the palace. It’s really beautiful and insanely opulent. Not hard to see why the working class of France hated this monarchy. The gardens really were the most beautiful part.

Today B’s mom took the girls to Paris Disney and me and B were reunited with C! She’s coming through Paris on her way to rural France so we get a couple more days to hang out. The day started with B and me heading to Shakespeare and Co. and finding some street crepes. Once C arrived we let her lead the way to this amazing taxidermy shop and a couple other weirdo places that were awesome. Found some great vintage dresses and a necklace along the way. We visited Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre and watched an insane street performance. Wandering back down the hill we suddenly found ourselves outside this historic establishment. We ended up having dinner at an amazing restaurant called Bistro Lorette. We ended with some wine and cheese on the lawn of Louvre. Really great day exploring Paris!

So today I woke up insanely early. I think I was just really excited to wake up in Paris. Everyone else was still sleeping so I decided to go for a run. I stuck to the river so I didn’t get lost. Ran past so many great spots; The Louvre, the love lock bridge, the Orsay, and a bunch of other beautiful places I didn’t recognize. I made it far enough down the river that the Eiffel Tower came into view. Just the top half of it. I confess I got emotional. As much as I wanted to keep going so I could see the whole thing, I wanted to see it together with my family. So I went home. Everyone was still sleeping. I was like a kid on Christmas waiting for my parents to wake up so I could open presents. Ugh.

Finally everyone was up and ready to wander. We walked around Notre Dame and went up on the bell tower. We got some delicious sandwiches for lunch. The U.S. played Belgium tonight so we definitely wanted to see as much of that match as possible, but we had tickets for the Eiffel Tower right around sunset. So we had some food and watched the first half of the match, then took the metro down to the Eiffel Tower. It was amazing. We got some great day time shots in the park with the Tower in the back. Then we went up to the platform about half way up and enjoyed the view, the sunset, the lights, some wine. It was perfect.

On the way back, B bought a bottle of champagne and we slugged it from the bottle as we walked back to our apartment. We had a blast.

So this morning was a crazy whirlwind getting out of Barcelona. We had tickets for the high speed train leaving at 9. We were a sight; 5 of us dragging an insane amount of luggage down the street to the metro and making our way to the train station. A bunch of the escalators in the metro stations were down so we had to drag our luggage up and down so many stairs. At one point we attempted to jump on a metro train that was  packed with so many morning commuters, that only B’s mom and Lulu made it on. I was yelling through the glass at them so they would know which stop to get off at. We arrived shortly after them to find that Lulu’s phone had been picked from her purse on the metro. She was in tears. Ugh. So much drama. But we finally made it on the train and headed off to PARIS!!! We were all glad to have a few hours of relaxing time on the train and ended up chatting with several charming and delightful Aussies. B and I escaped to the beverage car for a mimosa.

Once we finally arrived in Paris, we were reliant on B’s mom to get us to the apartment, since she was kind enough to book it. It took us a few minutes to figure out which direction to walk, but before long we were on the way. The walk was really only about a mile and a half, but we had so much luggage we were dragging and the girls and B’s mom were so tired. So we put them all in a cab with as much luggage as we could and sent them ahead. So me and B, backpacking packs on, continued walking through Paris. It was surreal and amazing. We passed by Notre Dame and Shakespeare and Co. I love Spain and I know I will miss it, but right now I am just overjoyed to be in PARIS!

Made it to the apartment and got checked in. Then headed back out to find some dinner. Ate at a great little restaurant down the street and went home for some much needed sleep. Because tomorrow we PARIS! and EIFFEL TOWER!!

Yesterday the girls walked around the Old City of Barcelona with B’s mom while we started packing up the apartment. We’re really having to pare down our luggage now. Today is our last full day in Barcelona and we still have not gone inside Sagrada Familia. So today we went down early to beat the lines and heat. It was worth every cent. The inside is magical and hard to describe. You really just have to see it for yourself. I chose a tree pose for this photo because Gaudi designed the inside beams to mimic tree trunks and branches. If you ever visit Barcelona, this really is a must see. The hype is well deserved.

This is a stretch of street from Placa Espanya to the Palau Nacional. There is a “Magic Fountain” show in front of the Palace several nights a week. We took B’s family out for tapas and then came over here for the fountain show. It turned out there was a huge pride event going on. There were a ton of people, a drag show, all sorts of vendors. We made it up to the fountain and hung out for a bit. Then we put B’s family in a cab back to their apartment and took the metro home.

I can’t believe we only have a few more days in Barcelona. There’s a lot we haven’t done or seen. We have truly enjoyed just relaxing and being in such a laid back city. Today we went down to one of the nicer beaches a little further up the coast. Less touristy and nicer sand. This is probably our last beach trip before we leave Barcelona. Tonight B’s mom arrives. We’ll spend the next couple days showing her around Barcelona, then it’s off to Paris!

Today I dragged Lulu and Momo back to the Picasso Museum. It’s free for students and children so all of us get in for free. I gave them a “kung fu mission” to choose their 3 favorite pieces. They each chose really interesting ones.

Lulu chose Gored Horse. Momo chose Science and Charity. I nerded out in the room with all of Picasso’s interpretation of Valasquez’s Las Meninas. We had some really nice discussions about these pieces, what they might mean, and why Picasso painted them.

Today the U.S. played Portugal in an epic World Cup match. Several of our friends in various places ended up in a live Facebook chat blow by blow of the match. W in California, me and B here in Barcelona, C in southern Spain, and A in Italy. So much fun to be able to be connected and enjoying a huge event together. Final score 2-2. We move on!

We have walked this hallway so many times because for whatever reason we always need to connect between these two lines. This hallway is so long that you can’t see either end from the middle of it. It takes a good 5 minutes to walk the full length of it. There is always someone playing the accordion or guitar in the middle. I actually wrote a short story that is partially set in this hallway. I will post it in the future. Today we walked this hallway again because we took Lulu and Momo up to Tibidabo. We also saw a Havelina (wild pig) and the girls went on the 100 something year old carousel. And the church was open! So we had a great afternoon. Now home for World Cup!

I accompanied D to the airport this morning. The sadness of friends leaving was alleviated today because one of the Brits is here in Barcelona visiting one of her (many) BFF’s! We met S and a couple of her friends for tapas and drinks. It was great to see her again after several weeks and to catch up on her new assignment in Madrid. One of her friends visiting from the UK shared with us that he was almost cast as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies. So, me and B felt old while our kids were enamored and talked HP with them for half the night. This is a beautiful church we walked past on our way home.

Today was D’s last full day in Barcelona. It’s been wonderful seeing friends from home finally and I will miss it. Today we walked down to the beach and had a drink by the awesome dragon fountain in Parc de la Ciutadella. Apparently we were too engaged in conversation to have enough sense to snap a yoga photo in that awesome location. So instead we got this shot on our way home after dinner at the Italian restaurant on the corner of our street.

Everything about this picture makes me laugh. Today I finally made it to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. They don’t allow photos in the galleries so I had to settle for one in the foyer. This guy joined my photo just as I was twisting myself into this pose. I wonder what he’s thinking.

C left yesterday but D is still here! Even though we’ve been here almost a month, there is a lot we haven’t seen. Barcelona is the city of Antoni Gaudi, the famous Catalunyan architect. You can’t go far without seeing something he designed, built, or influenced. So today we decided to explore one of his most famous buildings; La Pedrera. Absolutely gorgeous.

Today is C’s last day here. So even though we are all ridiculously exhausted from the week of adventures and staying up late, we dragged ourselves out for one more adventure. We hiked up Mt. Tibidabo to this old amusement park that is still in operation. There is a beautiful church at the top also. It is an interesting juxtaposition, a 100 something year old carousel next to a 100 something year old church. They were build around the same time. The church was closed so we made do with wandering around the outside.
